Electrical Wiring
How old is my Wiring?
Faulty & ageing wiring is one of the major causes of electrical fires in your home. This can be avoided by finding out the age of the wiring, and by carrying out regular checks on the condition of your cables, switches, socket outlets and other accessories, which all deteriorate with time & use. Distinct signs that can determine the age of your electrical equipment are:
Cables coated in black rubber (Phased out in the 1960's)
Cables coated in lead or fabric (pre-1960's)
A fusebox with a wooden back, cast iron switches and/or a haphazard mixture of fuseboxes (pre-1960's)
Older round pin sockets & round light switches, braided flex hanging from ceiling roses, brown & black switches, sockets mounted in skirting boards and wall mounted light switches in bathrooms (pre-1960's)
Does your electrical equipment have similarities to those listed? If the answers yes, then it's likely that your installation is over 30yrs old and may be in need of rewiring. Please note that electrical installations should always be constructed and maintained by approved contractors.
